Eyetracking and Facial Recognition: Enabling Direct Interactivity

A little more than 10 years ago, the "Minority Report” display interaction seemed futuristic, but the capability of machines to use multiple methods to anticipate human expectations has arrived.

One of the primary ways in which we as humans communicate is through non-verbal interactive cues, such as using our eyes and facial expressions to react to events around us. There is an increasing focus on eyetracking and facial recognition (and even emotion recognition based on eye/facial reactions) that serve to enable enhanced interactivity with display devices. This session features some of the industry leaders in this enabling communications technology discipline.

Marty Shindler, always with an eye on the future, will moderate this exciting and forward thinking panel at the premier industry event related to display technology.

The Creative Storage Conference is the pre-eminent conference for movie, TV and gaming executives who want to be current on the latest trends and techniques related to storage and cloud technologies.   Read the flyer here and view the final agenda here.

A highlight of the conference was be:

Keynote industry conversation, Steve Canepa with Marty Shindler

IBM is a leader in the media and entertainment market segment from many points of view, including its innovative products and services.

Steve Canepa, as the General Manager of the Global Media and Entertainment Industry for IBM, must carefully watch the trends inherent in many market segments to fully understand and react to their potential impact on his many businesses.

Similarly, given the long lead time in developing and deploying new technologies, IBM must predict the overall direction and challenges that industry segments may take and determine the best means to maintain and enhance its leadership position.

In this one to one keynote conversation, Steve Canepa and Marty Shindler, long time consultant to media and entertainment companies, will discuss and dissect the many potential rewards and challenges on the road ahead.

Marty Shindler also moderated a panel discussion at the conference.

The panel was:

Trekking to the cloud - wired, wireless, cellular enabled and satellite - looking to the future

As file sizes continue to grow and the number of end users increases, moving content through the Internet enables this content to be available wherever and whenever it is needed. Cloud storage is promising but there remain challenges (as well as rewards) for getting content transported to where it is needed quickly and securely.

There are many opinions as to how the future of content transport will evolve. This includes opinions on hat will occur with extensive installation of fiber optic communication by telcos, cablecos and Google. There is also considerable discussion of how sales of spectrum will impact the growth of access as society becomes increasingly mobile. This panel will take a look at the future, envisioning what content transport will look like up to 15 years from now.

Panelists included:

Ben Bloom, Service Line Manager Akamai Technologies Media + Gaming

Nathan Carman, Chief Engineer Cloud Infrastructure Solutions, Exelis Information Systems

Don Gabriel,  General Manager, Sales, EchoStar Satellite Services L.L.C.

Eric Markow, Fiber Communications Specialist, Bel Air Internet

Continuing the tradition, Marty Shindler will once again be moderating discussion of important industry topics at Digital Hollywood Spring 2014.

Both panels were held Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at the Ritz Marina del Rey, California.

The first at 7:45 AM is:

The Future of TV: From Primetime to Multi Platforms: Wall Street Analysts Meet Entertainment Executives

The future of TV is not just about the technology that is in place today and that which is on the horizon.

The future of TV involves deep insight into both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of content production and distribution and the impact that the technology may have on the many competitive and high stakes business models in place today and anticipated for tomorrow, shaped in part by the myriad of devices and content vying for our attention.

Also fundamental to the future vision of this important medium is how consumer behavior will impact the medium, i.e. what customers want, are willing to pay for and now much.

Analysts by definition work at the intersection of business and technology and regularly monitor the many metrics that form the foundation.

Our distinguished group of analysts will discuss, debate and even challenge some of the basic premises that are important as we look to the future of TV in an informative and engaging panel.

Panelists include:

The second panel is at 10:45 AM and is:

Hollywood Strategies - The Multi-Platform Brand - Video, TV & Mobile - 1st Screen, 2nd Screen, 3rd Screen - the 360 Degree

A fundamental strategy of all Hollywood originated content in the world of 2014 is multi-platform distribution. In some cases, the productions, movies and TV shows are released in a linear, windows fashion, and others have simultaneous release schedules.

In all cases the studios and broadcasters seek to exploit the content to the widest possible audience across a wide array of devices, content formats and delivery technologies for the longest time possible on a global level.

Our distinguished panel is uniquely qualified to provide deep insight into the many strategies and tactics that form the basis for content development decisions and in turn release schedules, 1st and 2nd screen technologies and other related methodologies and technologies. We’ll look at how those strategies have evolved in recent years and will also take a close look at how those will impact content of all kinds into the future.

As noted on the Second Screen Sunday website, “Broadcast, sports and live entertainment are at the forefront of the second screen revolution,” says S3 executive director Guy Finley. “At our 2nd Screen Sunday event, creative and technology leaders in the second screen space will showcase how mainstream television is expanding the viewer experience to include complementary, and contextual, content to their personal devices and how it will forever change the way television and advertising are produced, delivered and experienced.”

Once again, Marty Shindler is moderating one of the panels at this exciting conference.  It is entitled There’s an App for That…Or is There?

This panel is comprised of the following industry leaders and executives:

Tom Engdahl, Chief Executive Officer, Magic Ruby
Tracey Garvin, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Juan Reyes, Chief Technology Officer, BluFocus
Alex Terpstra, Chief Executive Officer, Civolution
D.P. Venkatesh, Chief Executive Officer, mPortal Inc

There are lots of issues to discuss on this compelling topic.  Among them, as the cost to develop more engaging experiences increases, do networks and cable operators consolidate their brands or do they continue to focus on their content brands one app at a time? Do 3rd party apps lend themselves to a catalog-wide experience for consumers that is better than having to find one app at a time?  Just what is the right strategy - is it a "special purpose" app or is it one that is "multi-function?"

Once again, Marty Shindler will be moderating a Wall St. themed panel at the 2012  Variety 3D Entertainment Summit.

Challenges Amidst Elevated Expectations - The Public Point of View
Moderated by Marty Shindler, CEO of The Shindler Perspective, Inc.

Elevated expectations challenge public companies working along the 3D stereoscopic value chain. Over the past 6+ years since the dawn of the modern 3D movie era, companies all along the value chain, from feature films to 3D TV and on to games, have been facing the various challenges, and at times, rewards as a result of their involvement in the industry niche.

Some of the elevated expectations have been created by journalists, some by Wall St. analysts and some by the companies themselves. This panel will discuss the challenges of being a publicly traded company working along the 3D stereoscopic value chain from two points of view: the role of investment professional/research analyst and that of executives with publicly traded companies.

Attendees will hear what they need to hear, not necessarily what they want to hear.

Confirmed panelists include Rich Ingrassia, Senior Research Analyst ROTH Capital Partners, LLC; Stephen Kovach CFA, Vine Alternative Investments; Richard LaBerge, Executive VP, Chief Marketing Officer, Sensio; and, Chris Yewdall, CEO DDD USA.
