Creative Storage Conference

Session D: Case Study: Digital
Storage in the Visual Effects Society Awards Moderator: Marty Shindler,
CEO, The Shindler Perspective In 2008, the Visual Effects Society created
a complete awards submission digital ingest, presentation and evaluation
workflow for its annual Awards program featuring submissions from visual effects
practitioners from around the world. This included online submissions from
anywhere in the world, electronic transfer for nominations, as well transcoding
the content into 5 different resolutions of Windows media and 5 different
Quicktime resolutions to support remote viewing and voting on 25 categories of
awards. Nearly 300 entries were submitted and 96 entries overall were nominated.
The storage system used supported secure access. This workflow greatly enhanced the entire process from submissions, to vetting and on to the nominations and to the final Online View and Vote where members could view the nominees in HD as well as at lower bit rates. This panel will discuss the methodologies used to set up the entire process, including storage requirements, through to the secure viewing and voting system and the final tabulations until the envelopes were opened onstage at the Awards.
